Encapsulating a vast expanse of mountainous terrain, Guadalupe Mountains National Park holds many unique and extraordinary features. An ancient limestone reef, the mountains contain both dizzyingly high peaks and startlingly deep canyons, a contrast of desolate, windswept lands and verdant forested havens. See the highest point in Texas, Guadalupe Peak, which stands 8,749 feet above sea level, and the 2,000-foot-high limestone walls of McKittrick Canyon. Get a taste of human history with a trip to Williams Ranch along the old Butterfield Overland Mail stage route to the historic home at the road's end or explore the Frijole Ranch History Museum which details the history of local inhabitants dating back hundreds of years. Hike along the trails of Salt Basin Dunes or enjoy a night of quiet, natural beauty in the forest at Dog Canyon. This northern Texas park sits right against the New Mexico state border, close to Carlsbad Caverns National Park, where nature's underground beauty can be explored.
Open daily year round. McKittrick Canyon, Williams Ranch and Salt Basin Dunes open during daylight hours only. Visitor center hours vary, check website for details.
Entry fee (7 day pass): Adults $5; Children 15 and under are free.
